The driver survived six days in the crashed vehicle

27-year-old Matthew Reum was pinned after driving off the road and crashing under a bridge. Six days later he was found by two fishermen.
– I looked in and moved the white airbag and there was a body in there, says Mario Garcia, who found the man in the car.

A driver from Indiana in the US who was trapped in his pickup truck for six days was miraculously rescued on Tuesday. This after two fishermen, who were out looking for a good fishing spot, discovered the car wreck under a highway bridge.

– I looked in and moved the white airbag and there was a body in there, says Mario Garcia, one of the fishermen who helped find the man.

Mario Garcia and his son-in-law, Nivardo Delatorre, initially thought the man, identified as 27-year-old Matthew Reum, was dead when they found the crashed vehicle under the bridge.

– The moment I touched his shoulder, he turned around and woke up, says Mario Garcia.

Couldn’t reach his mobile

The car driver, Mathew Reum is said to have told the fishermen that his mobile phone had fallen out of reach. It prevented him from calling for help. He also said that he tried to scream and shout, but no one heard him.

“It was just quiet, just the sound of the water,” he is said to have told the fishermen.

Police say Reum survived in part by drinking rainwater.

– It is a miracle that he survived, says the police.

After being rescued from the car, the 27-year-old was taken to a hospital with serious injuries, according to police. But on Wednesday he will be able to speak.

It is still unclear what caused the accident.
