The Swedish alcohol monopoly is regulated by Systembolaget. Every year, the state-owned company has a turnover of tens of billions. However, one product category has increased significantly recently.
Since the year 2000, sales of non-alcoholic beverages have increased by a breathtaking 788 percent. Over time, this has resulted in an ever-increasing selection, and nowadays there is beer, wine and cider without alcohol for those who want to refresh themselves with something good without getting drunk.
In 2023 alone, a whopping 3,553,757 liters of non-alcoholic beverages were sold at Systembolaget. That is an increase of 233,231 liters compared to 2022.

How is it then that sales have increased so much in recent years? In an interview with News24 tells Teodor Almqvist, press officer at Systembolaget, that there are several reasons. One of them is that the range of alcohol-free alternatives has grown and become more and more numerous.
– In recent years, we have seen a great development of the alcohol-free range in terms of, for example, beer, wine, ready-mixed drinks, cider and muster. In other words, today there are better and more products to choose from, he says.
According to Almqvist, another important component to the fact that the alcohol-free alternative is becoming more common is that consumers’ behavioral patterns over time.
– We see that behaviors are changing. More choose to completely abstain or reduce their drinking, he says, adding:
