Child Health and Diseases Specialist Prof. stated that energy drinks only provide temporary energy with their high caffeine and sugar content. Dr. Ahmet Güzel stated that it can cause many dangers in the long run, from heart rhythm disorders to epileptic attacks, from nutritional disorders to kidney damage.
‘CAFFEINE AND SUGAR INCREASE HEART RISK’
Prof. stated that these drinks pose serious life risks for individuals with a family history of heart disease and rhythm disorders. Dr. Güzel said, “Energy drinks can increase heart rate and cause rhythm disturbances due to the high amount of caffeine they contain. Heart rhythm disorders triggered by high caffeine content can also disrupt circulation and lead to clots and stroke attacks.
Children meet their daily calorie needs due to the high sugar and calories they consume with energy drinks, so they cannot get other natural nutritional sources. “In addition, the increased calorie intake with these energy drinks increases even more with snacks consumed together, leading to worsening nutritional problems and obesity, one of the most important problems of our age,” he said.
‘LONG-TERM DAMAGES AFFECT MUSCLES AND KIDNEYS’
Stating that such drinks can cause muscle breakdown and kidney damage by constantly activating the sympathetic system, Prof. Güzel said, “Young people who consume these drinks for more energy during sports activities should be more careful. Fluid losses through urine increase with the consumption of energy drinks during bodybuilding and intense physical activities, and the increased kidney load due to excessive muscle exercises can lead to undesirable consequences on the kidneys. “In addition, with the heavy consumption of these drinks, our young people may face problems such as insomnia, behavioral disorders and chronic fatigue.”
ALTERNATIVE SOLUTIONS TO ENERGY DRINK
Prof. Dr. He made the following suggestions for a beautiful, healthy life:
“Families should ensure that children acquire regular sleep habits and engage them in natural physical activities. In addition, foods that provide energy from natural sources should be consumed instead of energy drinks. For example, fresh fruit juices and a balanced breakfast both provide energy and support the healthy development of children.”
