The International English School in Täby’s dress code, including skirt length, restricts students’ freedom. Therefore, the school must dismantle the dress code, according to a decision from the School Inspectorate.

The authority began an investigation after it emerged that the English school in Täby had strict dress codes. In interviews, students told the School Inspectorate that, for example, they were not allowed to show bra straps, not wear low-cut shirts or short skirts.

Those who did not follow the instructions must have received warnings. Students also state that the dress code affects girls harder than boys, writes Dagens Nyheter.

According to the school’s principal, however, the school management has never stated that students may not wear a certain type of clothing. On the other hand, the previous school management was stricter about clothing, which can live on at the school.

But the School Inspectorate’s assessment is that the school’s rules in practice mean that students may not wear certain types of clothing. This is contrary to the School Act and the school’s mission to convey values about individual freedom and integrity.

By January 27 at the latest, the International English School in Täby must report how it scrapped the dress code.
