The negotiations between EU legislators and member states that started on Wednesday eventually dragged on for 17 hours.
EU legislators and member state governments are still trying to agree on the details of the new legislation on artificial intelligence technology.
The parties last met on the matter yesterday until late at night. The negotiations that started on Wednesday eventually dragged on for 17 hours.
According to the news agency Reuters, the parties reached a temporary agreement early Thursday morning on how the use of rapidly growing generative artificial intelligence applications such as ChatGPT should be regulated. There is currently no information on the details of the agreement.
According to official sources interviewed by Reuters, this was one of the biggest obstacles to the creation of a final agreement.
The use of artificial intelligence for surveillance purposes is still being negotiated. EU lawyers want to ban the use of artificial intelligence for biometric control. However, several governments of the member states of the Union have hoped for exceptions to the rule in cases concerning national security, national defense and military activities.
Legislation on artificial intelligence has been negotiated at the EU level since 2019. Due to rapidly advancing technology, it has been difficult for the parties to reach an agreement on the matter.
The EU’s possible draft law could serve as a model example for other countries that are also struggling with the regulation of artificial intelligence technology that is becoming more common.
