Frida Karlsson collapsed completely when she crossed the finish line in the last race of the Tour de Ski.
This can result in the Swedish being affected by a loss of form.
– It can be quite long after such an extreme performance, says the former national team doctor Per Andersson.
Swedish Frida Karlsson stood for a consistently top performance in this year’s edition of the Tour de Ski, and when all the stages were finished, the Swedish star stood there as the winner. Not since Charlotte Kalla’s victory in 2007/2008 had a Swede won on the women’s side, but the streak was broken by Frida Karlsson.
Doctor’s word
Directly after the finish after the climb up the slalom hill, a completely exhausted Karlsson collapsed and was in need of medical help, which caused unpleasant scenes in the finish area. The Swede eventually recovered, but the former Swedish national team doctor Per Andersson means that it can have consequences.
– It is very rare that you see any serious medical consequences of an extreme sports performance like this. At the same time, it is an incredible feat she is doing, Frida, who can push herself in this incredibly extreme way, says Andersson to TT.

He continues:
– Many skaters suffer from a loss of form that can be quite long-lasting after such an extreme performance. But if there is anyone who can handle this, it is Frida, she has an extremely good foundation to stand on, he says.

“No health care directly”
At the same time, Per Andersson emphasizes that it is about elite athletes with extensive experience of tough training in their baggage.
– You expose your body to perhaps the most extreme thing you can expose yourself to. Clearly, this is definitely not wellness she’s into, that’s for sure. After all, these athletes, including Frida, are extremely prepared and have a solid training background.

The fact that the skiers in the Tour de Ski climb the slalom slope in the last stage is something that has been going on for several years, but it also requires you to push your limits.
– Of course, you push the limits as much as you can. Exposing yourself to this many times is in any case not compatible with wellness. Repeatedly, there is an extreme strain on the heart, for example. It requires that you have no underlying infection or the like, because then it can have extremely serious consequences, concludes Per Andersson.
