The doctor’s alarm – the risk of patients falling between the chairs

The doctors alarm the risk of patients falling between

In Sweden you can choose to belong to a special health center. It is called to list. When you list, you should have the opportunity for a permanent doctor’s contact at the health center. Something that today fails in many parts of the country.

“The biggest consequence is death”

News24 Have talked to Jesper Salénformer actor who saddled to a doctor and specialist in general medicine. Salén is critical of today’s system.

– The disadvantage of constantly changing doctors is that a lot can fall between the chairs. Things are mixed up and missed. I have met a lot of patients where I have seen how jerky their care trip has been. Different bids and different medicines. We need someone who has overall responsibility, says Salén and continues;

– The biggest consequence is death, but also medical injuries and suffering, which can sometimes be worse than death. Somewhere we have lost it as a society. Now there is less continuity in primary care. No one is winning it or seems to like what it looks like right now.

Costly for society

Replacement of doctors has also become a cost issue for taxpayers. It takes time for the care to read on new patients and doctors must constantly start from scratch. Patients may be involved in the problem as they often change health centers.

– It takes a long time to review medical records. There will be easy double investigations, unnecessary anxiety and you are investigating something that has already been investigated a year ago. It is a problem that should be reviewed politically. It needs to be regulated and we have to rethink, says Salén.

What you as the patient can do – the doctor’s tips

According to Salén, we must be helped to make the system work again. You as a patient can do this.

  • Lower expectations of Quickfixes. So dare to wait and accept waiting times.
  • Have confidence in the nurses. Those who respond by telephone at health centers are trained nurses. They can determine what is urgent or not.
  • Do not switch a health center unless you really have to. Change of health center often, causes neither the patient nor the healthcare professional to get to know each other and then both have to start over on a new ball after each visit.
  • Be patient and find a doctor for whom you have confidence.
  • Just replace doctors in case of urgent cases. If it is not urgent, you should rather wait a week longer to see your GP.
  • Be more aware that you get to see the same doctor when you book a time. Keep track of who is your GP and when booking time, make sure that it is the doctor you should get to see.
