The discovery at the kebab maker: Mold on the walls

Mold in the premises, risk of pests and lack of sampling during the year.
This was noted by the Swedish Food Agency when they checked a kebab manufacturer in southern Sweden that supplies meat to several restaurants.
– There are not many companies we come across where we see such major deficiencies, says Karin Cerenius, unit manager for the control of food companies at the Swedish Food Agency to TV4 Nyheterna.

It was earlier in October that the Swedish Food Agency paid an inspection visit to a kebab manufacturer in southern Sweden. There they were able to state that the company does not meet the requirements regarding several points.

Among other things, it concerns a lack of hygiene, maintenance and design of premises as well as microbiological criteria for food.

The kebab company had not taken samples of meat, equipment and premises in 2023. The last test was carried out in October 2022. The Swedish Food Agency also discovered old fat deposits and mold on the walls that unprotected meat came into contact with.

– There are not many companies we meet where we see major shortcomings as in this case. The vast majority are very talented and take great responsibility, says Karin Cerenius.

Has several different suppliers

The company supplies kebab meat to wholesalers, traders, restaurants and pizzerias.

According to the decision, the company has previously had problems with pests. Despite this, they have not repaired doors that increase the risk of vermin entering the premises. Personnel who work for the company must also lack proper training for food handling.

After the discovery, the kebab manufacturer must remedy the deficiencies, or risk ongoing fines
SEK 45,000 per week. According to the decision, the company has confirmed that they must remedy the deficiencies that exist.

Should be aware of the problems

Despite the discovery, Karin Cerenius does not think that consumers should be concerned.

– As a consumer in Sweden, you should feel safe and we will follow up the company and take the necessary measures.

According to staff at the company with whom TV4 Nyheterna has been in contact, they have started to take measures. They state that they are aware of the problems that have been and have started cleaning equipment and premises.
