The development that excites the scientific world Turkish astronomers discovered

Ankara University Faculty of Science, Department of Astronomy and Space Sciences Head and Lecturer Prof. Dr. Selim Osman Selam, research assistant from the same department Ekrem Murat Esmer, Assoc. Dr. Ozgur Basturk and Prof. Dr. The discovery, carried out by Selim Osman Selam and Sinan Aliş, PhD, from the Department of Astronomy and Space Sciences at Istanbul University, and published in a respected international journal, went down in the history of science as the second planetary discovery originating from Turkey.

prof. Dr. Selim Osman Selam made a statement regarding the discovery of two new planets.

The 80-centimeter-diameter Professor at the Ankara University Kreiken Observatory for the discovery. Dr. Explaining that the Berahitdin Albayrak telescope and the Istanbul University Observatory’s 60-centimeter telescope in Çanakkale Onsekiz Mart University Ulupınar Observatory Campus, light measurement observations of the double star were made, the observations obtained by the Kepler and TESS space telescopes were also used. reported that their time was analysed.

“With these observations, we have discovered the existence of two Jupiter-sized giant planets in addition to a previously discovered planet in the Kepler-451 system.” Sharing his knowledge, Selam continued as follows:

“Explorations of planets were made using the changes in the time of the eclipses seen in this system. In the study, it was determined that this system, which contains a total of three planets, orbits in stable orbits. Finding planets around binary stars is a bit of a challenge. According to the world literature, planet discovery around binary stars is from Turkey. In addition, the first planet discovery from Turkey belonged to Ankara University, so the second planet discovery was also made at Ankara University.

Since Turkish researchers found the 21st and 22nd planets around binary stars, the number of planets discovered in this sense has increased to 22. One of the planets is approximately 1.5 times the mass of Jupiter, and the other is close to twice the mass. Since there are gas giant planets, there is no possibility of life on these planets. We also calculated orbital times. The orbital period of one of the discovered planets around the binary star system, that is, it completes a year in 43 days, and the other completes a year in 1800 days.”

EXCITED THE SCIENCE WORLD

Ankara University Faculty of Science, Department of Astronomy and Space Sciences Head and Lecturer Prof. Dr. Selim Osman Selam stated that the Kepler-451 binary star system consists of a subdwarf type star with a surface temperature of approximately 29,300 degrees Celsius and another dwarf-type star with a surface temperature of 2580 degrees Celsius, adding, “In addition, Kepler-451 will have two stars around it after Kepler-47. It was the second binary star system to have more planets discovered.” said.

Stating that one of the components of the binary star system is, in a sense, a star that has come to the end of its life and that it only has a hot core, Selam said, “Founding planets around such star systems presents an interesting opportunity for the theory and evolution studies. “There are not many planets expected around it. In this sense, it was an interesting and exciting discovery in the scientific world.” he said.

by TÜBİTAK Assoc. Dr. Stating that the study supported within the scope of the 1001 R&D Project titled “Exoplanet Discovery by Timing Method”, conducted by Özgür Baştürk, was also carried out within the scope of doctoral student research assistant Ekrem Murat Esmer’s doctoral thesis, Selam said, “The scientific article explaining the discovery of planets in the Kepler-451 system, Oxford It was published in the “Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society”, one of the most prestigious journals in the field, published by University Press.”

NEW PLANETS GIVEN NAMES

Stating that within the scope of the study, the orbital period of the other planet previously discovered in the same binary star system was updated as 406 days, Selam said that these new planets discovered by Turkish astronomers are similar in mass to the planet discovered in the system in 2015.

prof. Dr. Selim Osman Selam stated that together with the two new planets discovered in the Kepler-451 binary system, these three planets in total took their places in the common exoplanet catalog of the astronomy community (exoplanet.eu) with the names “Kepler451b”, “Kepler451c” and “Kepler451d” according to the international naming rules.
