The horrific consequences of the war are now being revealed in several Ukrainian cities following the withdrawal of Russian troops.
The international media report numerous casualties and massive devastation, including in Borodyanka, northwest of the Ukrainian capital, and in Trostynets, in the northeastern part of the country.
American New York Times writes that an estimated 200 people have disappeared and died in Borodyanka. According to local authorities, dozens of people are feared lying dead under the rubble.
Borodjanka is located on the road to Kiev. So it was one of the first places Russia hit in the war.
A New York Times reporter visited Borodyanka on Tuesday after Russian troops had left.
Gaping openings in apartment buildings
The traces of the attack are unadorned. Several residential buildings have collapsed in the airstrikes. The apartment buildings along the main street have large openings.
Residents fled the airstrikes to the basements. Dozens of them are feared dead under the collapsed buildings. Rescue workers have begun digging out the bodies.
Standing by the destroyed houses Andrei Zjuzko told the reporter that his mother was missing.
– I can not find him. We expect the rubble to be cleaned up, Zjuzko said.
News channel CNN again, she tells of a woman whose dead man was lying near her garden shed, her hands tied behind her back. Police said the man had been shot in the head.
In the past, pictures of numerous similar civilian casualties of the Russian invasion have been published in the small town of Bushan, northwest of Kiev.
Rapid executions, torture and looting
British Guardian in turn, tells of Trostynets, who was badly destroyed in the war. Russian troops also invaded this city south of Sumy at the very beginning of the war.
The soldiers settled at the city’s train station, among other places. The station’s environment is now full of traces of fierce fighting.
Remains of several tanks are lying near the train station. Next door is a yellow bus with blood-stained seats.
The Russians left the city when the Ukrainians counterattacked.
The Guardian says it found evidence of quick executions, torture and systematic looting in Trostynets during the two-day visit.
Local residents told the reporter about people killed, homes destroyed and goods stolen. The mayor estimates there are dozens of civilian casualties in the city.
– Absolutely more than 50, but probably not hundreds, Yuri Bova said.
However, the search for evidence of possible Russian war crimes is still in its infancy in Trostynets, as in so many other Ukrainian cities.
