After highlighting Magical Parkour last week, Square Enix today unveils a brand new video from Forspoken which, this time, focuses a few minutes on the combat system and the spells that Frey can evoke. From what we are told, each type of magic will have its own characteristics in terms of attack, support and Parkour. After unlocking any basic spell, the heroine can improve it by recovering mana. The first power she will have the opportunity to learn during her journey is Salvo, a spell from Violet Magic and one of the variants of which is Explosive Salvo “Since this earth-based explosion spell deals area damage, we thought it would be appropriate to summon a large boulder that rapidly expands in four directions.explains Ryota Nozoe, head of visual effects at Luminous Productions, on PlayStation Blog. This is the first spell Frey gets (and the first we’ve worked on), so we made it really straightforward.

We are also reminded that Frey can count on Cuff, his bracelet which will allow him to reduce the damage taken while offering counter-attack opportunities. Like Aloy’s Focus (Horizon), it is also used to retrieve a whole lot of information about opponents in order to better target their strengths and weaknesses. Cuff will also be useful during the exploration phases to both spot areas of interest and detect potential enemies.

Later in the adventure, Frey will be able to master Red Magic which will allow him to inflict great damage in close combat. One thinks in particular of the Slash power which makes a large magic blade appear. By charging it, the heroine will access other equally devastating powers. As for Blue Magic and Green Magic, they include a multitude of attack and support spells, which fill the magic influx gauge and trigger a spell of incredible power capable of annihilating any opposing opposition in one shot.

With so many spells available, in theory, it will be possible to vary the approaches in order to eliminate the creatures with maximum efficiency. This is what we will be sure to check when we have the game in our hands. In the meantime, we remind you that Forspoken is expected for January 24, 2023 on PS5 and PC.
