South Carolina will be the first to choose the Democratic candidate for the US presidential election next year. Iowa, which for several decades has been the starting point for the primaries, must step aside.

The decision was made at the Democratic Party convention in Philadelphia. Proponents of redrawing the election calendar have pointed out, among other things, that Iowa is not sufficiently representative of the United States as a whole. The party also hopes to attract more African-American voters.

The proposal to switch a number of states in the schedule was introduced by President Joe Biden in December and has now been voted through – only members from Iowa and New Hampshire opposed the proposal.

South Carolina will vote on the nominee on February 3, 2024, followed by New Hampshire, Nevada, Georgia and Michigan.

The Republican Party still plans to hold its first nominating convention in Iowa next year.
