The UN General Assembly declared July 11 as “Srebrenica Genocide Remembrance Day”. Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic, who opposed the decision, could not hold back his tears.
ACCEPTED BY MAJORITY VOTE
The UN General Assembly adopted a resolution to commemorate the genocide that took place in Srebrenica, Bosnia and Herzegovina, on 11 July 1995, as an international day of remembrance. While 84 representatives voted in favor and 19 against the draft resolution on the “International Day of Remembrance and Reflection on the 1995 Srebrenica Genocide”, 68 representatives abstained.
In addition to Serbia, China, Russia, Syria, North Korea, Hungary and Belarus were among the countries that voted against the bill submitted by Bosnia and Herzegovina, Germany and Rwanda.
VUCIC’S REACTION WAS ON THE AGENDA
Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic invited representatives to vote against the resolution before the vote at the UN General Assembly. Vucic argued that this decision would “open Pandora’s box”.
Claiming that the UN General Assembly would have to evaluate dozens of similar bills after the Srebrenica bill, the Serbian leader said that the bill would not contribute to peace.
HE HUGED THE FLAG AND CRIED
On the other hand, it was noteworthy that Vucic burst into tears while the decision was approved. The moments when Vucic hugged the Serbian flag and cried were talked about a lot on social media.
THE DECISION ALSO CALLS TO OTHER COUNTRIES
According to AA, The resolution declaring July 11 as “Srebrenica Genocide Remembrance Day” also unreservedly condemns the denial of the Srebrenica genocide and calls on member states to prevent the denial and distortion of the genocide. The resolution text also calls on the UN Secretary-General to start commemorating the 30th anniversary of the genocide and to create an information program called “Genocide and the UN in Srebrenica”.
