101-year-old Josef S, who was stated to have served as a guard in the Sachsenhausen concentration camp during the Nazi period in Germany, was sentenced to 5 years in prison by the Neuruppin State Court.
HE WORKED IN THE CONCENTRATION CAMP
The court sentenced guard Josef S to 5 years in prison, finding him guilty of helping to murder more than 3,500 people while he was serving in the Sachsenhausen concentration camp in Nazi Germany during 1942-1945.
President of the Tribunal, Udo Lechtermann, stated that it was concluded that the accused had served in a concentration camp for 3 years and stated that Josef S willingly supported the mass killing of people.
In the case that started in October 2021 and lasted for about 9 months, Josef S denied that he served in a concentration camp and claimed that he worked as an agricultural worker near Pasewalk city of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern state during the said period.
The prosecution, which presented documents to prove that Josef S worked in the concentration camp, demanded that the defendant be sentenced to 5 years in prison. The guard’s lawyers wanted his client’s acquittal.
The case, which was interrupted many times due to the 101-year-old defendant’s illness, was held in a gym in the city of Brandenburg, where Josef S resides, and the hearings lasted approximately 2.5 hours. (AA)
