The death toll rises in Slovenia after several days of widespread downpours and floods.

Further deaths were reported on Monday, bringing the total death toll to six.

Large parts of central and northern Slovenia have been under water since the floods and landslides began on Thursday, making access to many towns difficult. But on Monday, the emergency services tried to open up the roads to the most remote or isolated places.

Slovenia has also asked for help from the EU in the clean-up work.

A first truckload of humanitarian aid and food arrived from Hungary late Sunday. Croatia is contributing a military helicopter to help restore an embankment on the Mura River.

The natural disaster is the worst in the country’s 30-year history, Prime Minister Robert Golob said on Sunday.

The government estimates that the damage could amount to half a billion euros.
