The death toll in Turkey rose to 44,218 on Friday night, and with Syria’s latest announced figure of 5,914, the combined death toll in the two countries rose to more than 50,000, according to disaster and emergency agency AFAD.
It has been nearly two weeks since the disaster and Turkey has begun work to rebuild the thousands of homes that were destroyed, according to a government official.
More than 160,000 buildings that together housed 520,000 apartments collapsed or were severely damaged during the quakes in the two countries.
