South Yorkshire Police say Johnson died of blunt force trauma to the neck.
Ice hockey player by Adam Johnson29, the death is being investigated as a homicide, says South Yorkshire Police. The police say they arrested the suspect on Tuesday. The suspect is still in custody.
Johnson, who played for Nottingham Panthers, died at the end of October. A skate cut Johnson’s neck in a British Challenge Cup match. Johnson later died of his injuries at the hospital.
The investigation into the cause of death shows that Johnson died due to an injury to the neck, the police say.
– We started the investigation immediately after the tragedy. Since then, we have carried out extensive inquiries to piece together the events that led to Adam’s passing in these unprecedented circumstances, Crime Sgt. Becs Horsfall says in the announcement.
In his career, Johnson played 13 NHL games for the Pittsburgh Penguins. In Europe, in addition to Nottingham, he played in Swedish Malmö and German Augsburg.
