Widespread riots started in France when the police shot dead 17-year-old Nahel M of Algerian background in Nanterre, a suburb of Paris, on Tuesday of last week.

Last year, the French police shot a total of 13 people dead during traffic stops. According to Reuters as of 2017, the majority of victims of such shootings have been black or Arab.
Demonstrators have burned and destroyed cars and properties all over France. For example, according to the regional transport network operator, the riots in Paris have caused around 20 million euros in damage to the city’s public transport.
Academy researcher Timo Miettinen raised two root causes for the protests in an interview with : social inequality and failed urban planning.
– In many ways, France is an unequal society with a lot of different prejudices related to ethnic background, Miettinen estimates.
