ProSieben bows to the zeitgeist and makes one of the most drastic changes in recent TV history. We have known for three months that the private broadcaster in the future no more blockbusters on Sunday at 8:15 p.m will show. This institution, which has remained immovable for years, gives way to a pure show program. Now it is also known when the last Sunday blockbuster will run on ProSieben.

Blockbuster farewell at ProSieben in a month

As the broadcaster announced in a press release, the replacement program will start on September 18, 2022 the last blockbuster Sunday at ProSieben will take place on September 11th. Instead of Marvel and DC there is “Local Hero”. In initially 4 episodes, star duos such as Verona Pooth and Wigald Boning travel around the world and face regional challenges, for example in Thailand or Scotland. The format operates under the term traveltainment and represents the beginning of a major offensive in this direction.

ProSieben boss Daniel Rosemann on the characteristics of a traveltainment show:

Our viewers can accompany celebrities to places of longing in the new formats on Sunday evening. Big pictures, exciting stories, tasks and experiences – just dream away at the end of the week. Why are there no more ProSieben blockbusters on Sundays?

Three developments flow together that justify and even force the broadcaster’s step:

  • 1. Audience viewing habits have changed. Viewers under the age of 50 are increasingly consuming films and series from Netflix, Amazon, Disney+ and Co. This is nothing new.
  • 2. A fairly new challenge are the exclusive rights that many streaming services claim for themselves. No studio produces more films per year than Netflix. But none of the films will ever be shown on free TV. At least there is currently no indication that it will.
  • 3. The pandemic also temporarily turned off the tap of the film industry. Filming breaks and complicated filming led to delivery bottlenecks. In the last 24 months, fewer films have simply appeared. Of course, that hits a film broadcaster like ProSieben particularly hard.
  • This is how ProSieben soon in-house productions five days a week, so shows like Who’s stealing the show? to run. And the film gradually disappears from television.
