The data center in the big MMORPG for Elder Scrolls is failing and no one has been able to play for hours

There was an unusual incident in The Elder Scrolls Online on December 12, 2024, as a result of which no one from North America or Europe has been able to make the virtual Tamriel unsafe for hours.

What happened? Last night the servers of The Elder Scrolls Online suddenly became unavailable. A short time later, community manager Gina Bruno explained in the official forum (via elderscrollsonline.com):

“We are currently experiencing an issue where all ESO NA and EU mega servers as well as the ESO account page are offline due to a data center power outage. We are working as quickly as possible to restore power and will let you know as soon as we have an appointment.”

A power outage? Surely that’s easy to fix, right? Well, just before 8 on December 13, 2024, the servers are still offline. MeinMMO brings you up to date.

What is the current status? There were numerous updates from the community manager throughout the night. In the last post, the Zenimax employee explained (via elderscrollsonline.com):

This time a slightly more extensive update! We are making solid progress, although there is still a lot of work ahead of us. We expect to continue working through the night to test and bring all live realms back online.

As such, we are currently planning to launch the NA and EU servers for PC on Friday, December 13th at approximately 10am EST/3pm GMT [Anm. der Red.: 16 Uhr unsere Zeit] and will update the status of console realms shortly thereafter. The PTS will remain offline over the weekend and is scheduled to come back online early next week.

We will inform you tomorrow morning about the latest status. We greatly appreciate everyone’s continued patience.

In previous statements, Gina Bruno explained that a major emergency power outage occurred in the data center, which failed to trigger the standard backup failsafes for several customers affected by the outage.

According to the community manager, this type of outage is designed to cut off all power in the event of a fire or flood. The failure now requires a complete restart of the hardware. The piecemeal reconstruction is a methodical and lengthy process that includes additional checks and tests.

How does the community react to the incident? The unavailable servers and Zenimax updates were of course a big topic in the ESO Reddit section.

  • FLIPSIDERNICK jokes on Reddit: “That’s how the dinosaurs escaped in Jurassic Park, I’m just saying.”
  • ShingetsuMoon sees it positively (via Reddit): “Oof. Yes, it will take a while for them to get back on their feet. Time to catch up on some other games.”
  • GreatMoloko knows situations like this (via Reddit): “As an IT director who has been through something like this, I feel sorry for these people. It’s going to be a long weekend.”
  • Technical-Cow-2494 is worried about his data (via Reddit): “Let’s hope we don’t lose our accounts in the process, take your time, developers.”
  • A loss of account data or character progress would of course be a disaster for players and developers. As soon as there is an update in this regard, we will keep you updated. In the meantime, you can distract yourself with the most exciting trailers from the Game Awards 2024, for example.
