The Darfur war seen through the trial of Ali Kushayb

Since April 2023, Sudan has experienced a new outbreak of violence, pitting General Hemedti’s Rapid Support Forces (RSF) against the regular army of General and Head of State Abdel Fattah al-Burhan. The FSR succeeded the Janjawid militias which, in the service of the regime of Omar al-Bashir, had sown terror in Darfur during the 2003-2004 war. Ali Mohamed Abd-el-Rahman [aussi connu sous le nom d’Ali Kushayb, NDLR], a former leader of the paramilitary group, is currently on trial at the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague for crimes against humanity and war crimes. But how did the Sudanese power finance and arm the Janjawids during the civil war of the early 2000s?
