The cycling promotion about speed freaks: “They scare others”

Food service on mopeds, electric skateboards, regular electric bikes and of course the much-debated electric scooters. These are just some of the vehicles that are to be found on the cycle paths these days.

The increased variety – and above all the different speeds – sees the interest organization Cykelfrämjandet as problematic.

– It may seem cool, but it also scares a lot of children and others who don’t dare to cycle, so you destroy the freedom of movement for others, says Per Hasselberg, chairman of Cykelfrämjandet.

Which category the vehicles are classified as – which determines whether they are allowed to drive on the bike lane – is not entirely clear. According to the Swedish Transport Agency, it depends on the speed for which the vehicle is designed. If it is designed for a higher speed than 25 kilometers, it must be classified as a class 1 moped, and must then only drive on the carriageway.

Will look different in 50 years

Sergei Gerasimenko, who both builds and sells unicycles and rides himself in his spare time, believes that it is natural that the cycle track contains more and more vehicles of different types.

– In 50 years there will be a completely different flora and fauna on the cycle path, that is today’s reality, come on Sweden, he says.

Many of the unicycles he sells have a top speed of over 70 kilometers per hour. He admits that he likes to ride fast, and that he is used to angry looks from cyclists. At the same time, he says that with speed comes responsibility.

– But I see us as knights, we are superior in traffic and then you also have to behave politely. There are always those who do stupid things but Darwin will take care of them, faster than the police.
