Kerstin Erlandsson made an unusual find in a package of crushed tomatoes from the Hello Fresh grocery bag. At the time, she was cooking meat sauce for dinner for her family. But when she is about to add crushed tomatoes, she gets a shock.
– I was going to pour the packet of crushed tomatoes into the minced meat sauce I was cooking and then a big dark lump came out. I was a bit shocked and didn’t know what it was. So I poked it a little with the spatula and saw that it was some kind of debris so then I poked it open and rinsed it in the kitchen faucet and then saw that it was a big blue piece of plastic, she says to News24.
Kerstin kept calm and finished cooking dinner. But in retrospect, she doesn’t think it felt so good to have plastic in her food, and she therefore says she won’t buy from Hello Fresh again.
– It felt a bit unfresh, but I finished cooking the food and we ate. But of course it didn’t feel quite right. We have a small child and I want to be able to feel safe giving her good, fresh food. And if a large piece of plastic got into the food, what else could be in it in the form of bacteria and other things.

Kerstin chose to share the incident on Tiktok and in just under a week, the clip has received 280,000 views. During the video, many share similar experiences from the company.
“Very fresh. I was terrified at first because I kind of thought it was a dead rat when a big black lump came out of the package,” she captioned the clip.

Hello Fresh starts an investigation
Kerstin did not contact Hello Fresh after the incident. But when Nyheter24 sought Hello Fresh for a comment, they say they have now contacted Kerstin to compensate her and investigate the incident more closely.
– It appears that this incident took place in September 2023 and we are continuing the investigation to determine the supplier of crushed tomatoes at the time, says Carina BergHead of Communications at Hello Fresh.
She continues:
– At Hello Fresh, the safety of our customers always comes first. We place high demands on our suppliers and ourselves when it comes to complying with local food and safety laws. Our suppliers have strict quality control policies. The food is packed in a controlled environment and the suppliers have routines to minimize the risk of contamination by foreign objects, such as plastic.
