The Crown a controversy even before the release of season

THE CROWN SEASON 5. The Crown returns for its fifth season on Wednesday November 9, 2022. Former British Prime Ministers Tony Blair and John Major have criticized the Netflix series.

[Mis à jour le 7 novembre 2022 à 12h20] The Crown is one of the event series for the end of 2022. netflix puts online season 5 of this fiction adapting the history of the royal family this Wednesday, November 9, 2022, almost two months to the day after the death of Queen Elizabeth II. And while the episodes are not yet online on the streaming platform, this fifth season is already controversial.

Season 5 of The Crown will return to several crises that shook the royal family during the 1990s, and especially the explosive divorce between the then Prince Charles (who became king since the death of his mother on September 8 ) and Diana Spencer. These subjects are still sensitive for the royal family, who consulted their lawyers before the release of the series. Above all, Netflix freely adapts the story of the royal family, and the historical accuracy of the facts is regularly questioned by the relatives of the main protagonists.

An episode of season 5 The Crown is already controversial: we follow Prince Charles, played by Dominic West, maneuvering to restore his image. The latter speaks, in this episode, with Labor Prime Minister Tony Blair for this purpose, and also reveals to him that he plans to marry Camilla Parker Bowles. The real Tony Blair rose up, his spokesman saying that “it’s just nonsense”. For his part, former British Prime Minister John Major (conservative) believes in a letter to the Daily Mail that “we lack respect for those who are no longer with us, or we put words in the mouth of those who are still there but who are not able to defend themselves.” He thus recalled the fictional nature of the series, suggesting that a warning card be added at the start of each episode.

Season 5 of The Crown finally has a release date. Netflix has indeed confirmed that the series, which traces the life of the British royal family and its various scandals, will be back for a burst of ten episodes on November 9, 2022. All the episodes of the fifth season will be available on the streaming platform from 9:01 a.m.

As we change eras and generations, The Crown will change cast for season 5, as was the case for season 3. Imelda Staunton (Harry Potter 5) succeeds Claire Foy and Olivia Colman in the role of ‘Elisabeth II, while Jonathan Pryce will play her husband, Prince Philip. The Queen of England’s sister, Princess Margaret, will be played by actress Lesley Manville. Elizabeth Debicki finds herself playing Princess Diana, while Dominic West plays Prince Charles. Jonny Lee Miller (Elementary, Emma) has been cast as John Major.

Is The Crown faithful to historical reality?

Let the viewers make no mistake about it: The Crown certainly returns with great precision to real historical events, but certain parts – the most intimate in particular – are largely fictionalized. “Overall, it tells the real story well, but in order to make it a series, the writers took a lot of more or less serious liberties,” explained Joffrey Ricome, co-writer of The Crown, the true from the false, at the microphone of France info.

The Crown thus took liberties with historical reality. For example, if rumors have let it be known that Prince Philip would have had one or more liaisons, nothing has been proven, while the series seems to take sides in this direction: “There is no proof extramarital affairs of the prince consort. There have certainly been rumors but nothing proven”, detailed Joffrey Ricome in his interview with France info. According to him, Princess Margaret’s supposed jealousy of her sister is also exaggerated: “It was not the case, she was fine where she was. Margaret liked to party. And as being queen is very cumbersome, she was delighted to be number 2!” The Queen’s relationship with Jackie Kennedy has also drawn criticism, and the former First Lady’s stay didn’t go as badly as described. What do the royals think of The Crown?

The Queen’s communications officer told the Guardian in September 2019 that “the royal household never agreed to check or approve the content of The Crown, never asked to know what topics would be covered and never ‘will ever express a view on the accuracy of the program”. The Daily Express also reported in 2017 that Elizabeth II had watched the first two seasons well: if she would have liked the first, although it was very “romanticized”, she would not have liked the way the second portrayed icy relations between Prince Philip and his son Charles.

The Crown is a series created and broadcast on Netflix since November 4, 2016. To discover new episodes in streaming, all you need is a subscription to the platform. They are then visible unlimited directly on the site. Note that seasons 1, 2 and 3 are also available on DVD and Blu-Ray from Sony Pictures.
