It took a pandemic, and undoubtedly a bit of madness, for women to restore the nobility of the mullet cut, which three years later continues to attract all the attention… But a chic and modern version! The ‘cowgirl cut’, derived from the cut popularized by Chris Waddle in the 1980s, is today unanimous among celebrities, rising to the rank of star hairstyle of this end of year.
No offense to its (many) detractors, the mullet cut could overshadow the essential bob! For three years, this relic of the 80s, although it had long fallen into oblivion (or denial), has resurfaced, dominating hair trends with variations that are as chic as they are sophisticated. After the ‘chopped bob’, the ‘wolf cut’, or even the ‘shag cut’, which itself has had many versions, comes the ‘cowgirl cut’, which is also found under the name ‘ cowboy cut’, ultimately resulting in a mix of all these revisitations of the traditional mullet. An original way to end the year… in style.
Unlike the mullet cut, which results in a long neck and shorter hair at the temples and scalp, the ‘cowgirl cut’ is much more uniform. The idea is simple: it’s about enhancing the natural texture of the hair and giving it movement, a lot of movement, like after a long horse ride – you’re either a cowgirl or you’re not. There are ultimately no strict rules for this trendy haircut, other than adopting bangs, whether micro, curtain, or more classic, and succumbing to the appeal of the gradient or , we should say, gradients, to create volume and movement. Everything can easily be done on long, short or mid-length hair, and adapts – good news – to all hair textures.
It is the London-based hair salons Hershesons that we owe the name of this new hair trend, adopted by a host of celebrities, and explained in a tutorial presented on Instagram. Anja Rubik, Zoë Kravitz, Alexa Chung, Suki Waterhouse, Selena Gomez, Kendall Jenner, and even Laura Harrier, to name a few, are among those who have already embraced this western inspiration, occasionally or permanently. But the trend has already crossed the borders of the catwalks and red carpets, now taking over the streets and, of course, on social networks. On TikTok, hashtags associated with the ‘cowgirl cut’ already have several million views.
It should be noted that the ‘cowgirl cut’ is part of a broader trend which celebrates and highlights the aesthetic of the famous cowgirl. We saw it recently with ‘cowboy copper hair’, a subtly coppery red which has become the star color of fall, but also with ‘coastal cowgirl’, the aesthetic which has put cowboy boots back at the heart of fashion trends. And this could well continue until next summer, as seen on the catwalks of the spring-summer 2024 fashion shows, with a multitude of micro pieces – shorts and skirts – worn with high boots and cowboy boots, and a notable return of fringes as observed at Gucci, Jil Sander, Christian Dior, Prada, and Alberta Ferretti.
