On Saturday, thousands of people gathered for an annual tradition – the cow release.
The event brings together young and old and has grown immeasurably fast in popularity. The first time there were four people and now there were over 12,000 visitors.
– There are more and more, says Göran Thorsson, barn foreman at Nils Holgersson gymnasium.
90 happy cows, with almost as happy spectators. At Nils Holgerssongymnasiet in Skurup in Skåne ran out to green pastures over the weekend. In recent years, it has become an increasingly common activity to celebrate spring.
– But this year it was a record with over 12,000 people, so it’s great fun, says Göran Thorsson, barn foreman of Nils Holgerssongymnasiet.
“A Sign of Spring”
The cows are let out on green pasture now and are then allowed to go in and out as they please. The cow release takes place in many parts of the country but at slightly different times, roughly from mid-April to the end of May. In November, the cows are allowed to come in again because it is too wet and sticky for them to be outside.
– Now they have a long summer ahead of them, says the barn foreman.
Göran Thorsson believes that interest in the cow release is partly due to nostalgia and romance being associated with when the cows run out to green pasture.
– It is also a sign of spring. For a number of years it has become an important tradition that has spread and there are more and more. We try to accommodate everyone who wants to come, says Göran Thorsson.
