The Court of Appeal changes the verdict after the fatal accident on the E18 – the drunk driver is deported

On July 4, 2024, a serious traffic accident occurred on the E18 at Sörstafors, where a man was driving a van under the influence of alcohol and collided head-on with a passenger car. The accident resulted in the death of the driver of the vintage car, a man in his 40s from Degerfors, and several seriously injured.

The man, who comes from Poland, was sentenced in the district court for, among other things, aggravated causing the death of another, aggravated drunken driving and several cases of causing bodily harm. The district court sentenced him to three and a half years in prison but rejected the prosecutor’s request for deportation.

Changes the sentence

Chamber prosecutor Carl-Johan Norström was not satisfied with that and wanted to see harsher punishment and deportation. The Court of Appeal has now changed the district court’s judgment and decided to deport the man, with a ban on returning to Sweden. The man must remain in custody until the prison sentence can be carried out.

– I am very satisfied that the Court of Appeal changes the District Court’s judgment in such a way that the deportation request was granted without a time limit, says Carl-Johan Norström, Chamber Prosecutor.
