During her New Year’s speech, Queen Margrethe II announced that she is abdicating the throne in favor of her son, Crown Prince Frederik.
Danish DR’s court expert Cecilie Nielsen believes that the announcement is a unique moment in Denmark’s history. Something even court expert Roger Lundberg agrees with.
– It has been a tradition in Denmark, just like in Sweden and Norway, that you have your mission until the day your life ends. So everyone is taken to bed – not least in Denmark, he says.
“Has there been an invisible pact”
He believes that the announcement will have consequences in Sweden.
– There has more or less been an invisible pact between King Carl Gustaf, King Harald and Queen Margrethe that the Scandinavian monarchs do not abdicate. Here, the mission is a mission you have for life.
Roger Lundberg believes that the queen is handing over to a popular crown prince couple, which could affect the Swedish and Norwegian kings.
– The demands in both Sweden and Norway will increase strongly, where there are also popular heirs to the throne. We simply have to see what happens in the future, what King Carl Gustaf and King Harald choose to do. It is absolutely not impossible that they follow Queen Margrethe’s example and they too hand over.
