The wolf is protected. It may only be hunted under strictly controlled conditions. In order to regulate the number of wolves and prevent damage to domestic animals and reindeer, some protective hunting and licensed hunting may be carried out.
The county administrative boards decide on almost all wolf hunting. Decisions on protective hunting can be made by the county administrative boards throughout the year. License hunting for wolves began this year on January 2. In total, the county administrative boards in Gävleborg, Värmland, Västmanland and Örebro counties have decided on license hunting for a total of 75 wolves.
