According to reports in the national media, Kenyan Interior Minister Fred Matiang has announced that thousands of prisoners involved in minor crimes will be released between May and June.
JUSTIFICATION OF THE DECISION: COVERED PRISONS
Noting that the decision was taken because the prisons were overcrowded and there were not enough resources, Matiang’i stated that some people were kept in prison because they could not pay the traffic ticket.
Matiang’i stated that these people will be included in the parole program and they will work to integrate them into society so that they do not repeat the crime.
There are approximately 53,000 prisoners in prisons in Kenya. (AA)
