the country hit again by a storm and floods

In Greece, the dark series of natural disasters continues. After the fires of the summer, then the floods caused by storm Daniel at the beginning of September, new floods hit the country again, after the passage of a new storm called Elias. Since Wednesday, more than 250 people have been rescued by firefighters, supported by the army.

When Storm Elias arrived on Wednesday September 27, Greece was just beginning to recover from the consequences of Storm Daniel, which caused the death of 17 people and the flooding of the agricultural plain of Thessaly. The Greek authorities have just announced that they estimate the cost of repairing the infrastructure damaged by Daniel to be at least 600 million euros.

In this context, the passage of storm Elias this week carries a strange feeling of déjà vu with its flooded rivers, landslides, damaged dams, flooded roads and houses…

A repetition particularly illustrated by the port city of Volos, at the foot of Mount Pelion, where the cleaning of the damage caused by the previous storm had just been completed. Two rivers are currently in flood and the city’s main hospital, close to the sea, has for example been flooded, but outside the patient reception areas.

Bad weather was also the cause of the crash of a private helicopter Thursday morning off the Greek island of Euboea. Two people were on board at the time.
