The Correctional Service is requesting an extra SEK 2.28 billion in a supplementary budget for 2024. The money is needed to create almost 1,400 more detention and prison places by the end of 2024. This is evident from the budget documents the Correctional Service submitted to the government this week.
Already in the so-called capacity report that came out in December, the authority flagged that it will need an extra 2.28 billion this year.
For 2025, the correctional service requests a total allocation of just over 21 billion and then a gradual increase of just over three billion per year until 2027.
In the capacity report, the correctional service plans to have around 27,000 places in detention centers and institutions in 2033, compared to today’s around 9,000 places.
