The eighth part of the Skywalker saga, aka Star Wars: The Last Jedi, is on TV today. It is the only part of the sequel trilogy that was not directed by JJ Abrams, but by Rian Johnson (Looper, Knives Out) – and according to our Star Wars ranking, it is the best Star Wars film after Return of the Jedi.
Star Wars: The Last Jedi today on primetime television – and that’s what it’s about
After the events of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Rey (Daisy Ridley) finds the legendary Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) in exile on the water planet Ahch-To. The shaggy Jedi Knight does not match her expectations, but he lets himself be persuaded to teach her three lessons. In the process, Rey learns of Luke’s former connection to Han Solo’s renegade son Kylo (Adam Driver), who soon has his own plans for the Empire.
Meanwhile, Poe (Oscar Isaac) sends the rebels Rose (Kelly Marie Tran) and Finn (John Boyega) with BB-8 on a secret mission to the planet Cantonica, where they are to find a codebreaker in the casino city of Canto Bright who can deactivate the Imperial tracking device for locating spaceships. At the same time, Poe distrusts the rebel admiral Holdo (Laura Dern), who appears on the scene as a replacement for the injured Leia (Carrie Fisher) and is planning a risky maneuver.
Five years after the film’s release, director Johnson stated that he himself did not believe in Kylo’s words to kill the past, as some outraged fans had received his film:
For me, the final images of the film do not deconstruct the myth of Luke Skywalker, but rather build it up and embrace it. [Diese Bilder] resist the idea of ’throwing away the past’ and get involved in what the myth is really about and how it inspire the next generation becomes.
In any case, Johnson presented an original vision for dealing with Star Wars as a myth and implemented it with an artistic signature for grandiose genre cinema.
