The conservative party of the sitting prime minister gets more

When almost all the votes have been counted, Mitsotakis’s party has more than 40 percent of the votes and the left-wing party Syriza less than 18 percent.

In the parliamentary elections held in Greece on Sunday, the sitting prime minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis The New Democracy conservative party has won more than half of the country’s parliamentary seats.

When almost all vote has been calculated, Mitsotakis’s party has more than 40.5 percent of the votes and 158 seats in the 300-seat parliament.

The left-wing party Syriza received the second most votes, with less than 18 percent of the votes counted. Syriza gets 48 parliamentary seats.

– We have suffered a serious political defeat, said Alexis Tsipras after his party lost for the fifth time to Mitsotakis’s party.

According to Tsipras, Syriza must now be re-evaluated before next year’s European Parliament elections, and he also announced that party members will be allowed to evaluate his leadership.

In the previous elections held about a month ago, none of the parties got a majority in the country’s parliament.

The elections held in May were won by Mitsotakis’s party. Syriza came second. Mitsotakis decided to hold new elections when none of Greece’s three ruling parties expressed a desire to form a coalition government.

Now, out of the 300 seats in the parliament, 250 seats will be distributed according to the vote shares of the parties that exceeded the three percent vote threshold. In addition, the largest party gets 50 additional seats.

Mitsotakis: Major reforms are progressing quickly

Conservative leader Mitsotakis announced on the evening of election day that his party had received a strong mandate with its election victory.

– The people have given us a safe majority. Major reforms are progressing quickly, said Mitsotakis in a televised speech.

Mitsotakis campaigned especially on Greece’s economic growth and the return of tourism after the pandemic years. His popularity has been weakened by prices that have risen due to inflation and the train accident that took place in February that claimed the lives of 57 people.
