The confusing order of the series simply explained

The Fast & Furious series has changed a lot in the last 20 years. Quarter mile races were swapped for international conspiracies, Dom (Vin Diesel) rose from being a small-time crook to becoming a mastermind that was sought after worldwide. But the order of the series has also become increasingly complicated. Fast & Furious 6 will not be followed by Fast & Furious 7, but a completely different film. After Part 8 comes a spin-off. There are also short films and an unofficial prequel. We clarify.

After Fast & Furious 6 comes Part 3: This is the true order of the movies

Sorting the Fast & Furious films by storyline chronology (rather than release date) results in the following order:

The order above all raises one question: Why was Tokyo Drift made as the third film but occurs much later in the franchise’s plot? That’s why the Fast & Furious order is so complicated

The answer is relatively simple. Although the first three films are told in chronological order, Tokyo Drift introduces a completely new cast of characters and only shows Vin Diesel’s dome in a short scene. After the film, the series was restarted with a reboot. The next three films, namely Fast 4, 5 and 6, all took place before Tokyo Drift. You can see that in the character Han (Sung Kang) in particular.

Han apparently dies in an accident in Tokyo Drift, but the film made him a fan favorite. Almost 4-6 brought him back through the time jump and prepared his supposed death. The sixth installment in the series catches up with Tokyo Drift, set in Japan and reveals who is responsible for Han’s supposed demise.

When are the Fast & Furious shorts and spin-offs set?

In addition to the main films, there are two spin-offs that play after the eighth and tenth films. In addition, there are two Fast & Furious short films and an unofficial prequel:

  • Turbo Charged Prelude tells of Brian O’ Conner’s (Paul Walker) adventures between Fast 1 and 2.
  • Los Bandoleros Set before Fast 4, it features Dom hiding in the Dominican Republic, where he meets up with Han and Letty (Michelle Rodriguez).
  • In Better Luck Tomorrow Sung Kang plays a high school student named Han. The indie film is considered by many fans to be the unofficial prequel to the Fast series.
  • So, by the most liberal count, the action series spans 16 films, two of which are yet to come. Whether Vin Diesel really ends the series with Fast & Furious 10 Part 2 is another question.
