The confusing ending of Lupine season 3 on Netflix explained

Have you seen Lupine season 3 and have a big question mark on your forehead? Then you’ve come to the right place in this article about the machinations of the master thief Assane Diop (Omar Sy). We explain all 4 endings of Lupine and consider whether the mysterious letter in the very last scene changes the entire season.

Lupine ending #1 and 2: Assane defeats Jean-Luc Keller in 1998 and 2021

Lupine season 3 takes place in two different time periods: 1998 (during the World Cup in France) and 2021. In 1998, the young Assane (Mamadou Haidara) is taken to a boxing club by his friend Bruno during the summer holidays, but the club boss Jean-Luc Keller (Salif Cissé) takes advantage of the young people.

The young Assane and Bruno are supposed to help him with a robbery and Keller even forces Bruno to shoot a police officer while escaping in the car. The three of them get into a car accident. Bruno and Assane can escape and Keller goes to prison alone for 25 years.

In 2021, Keller still holds a grudge against Assane and blames him for everything. He kidnaps Assane’s mother (Naky Sy Savane) and forces him to commit almost impossible robberies. Assane is ultimately able to get Keller’s girlfriend Manon on his side. She arranges a meeting with Keller, but Assane shows up and calls the police.

Assane’s final plan was to have himself and Keller arrested together. Keller has to answer for the attempted murder of his henchman.

Lupine Ending #3: Assane goes to prison for his family

It is already clear at the beginning of Part 3 that Assane’s wife Claire (Ludivine Sagnier) and their son Raoul (Etan Simon) can only lead a peaceful life if Assane is in prison.

So that not only Claire and Raoul, but also his mother and his accomplice Benjamin (Antoine Gouy) be left alone by the police and the press, he asks. He leaves the honor of arrest to his admirer Youssef (Soufiane Guerrab).

In addition to Benjamin’s release, Assane demands all volumes of Maurice Leblanc’s Lupine series for his cell. Youssef knows full well that Assane will only stay in prison as long as he wants. In the end, Assane is happy in his cell. His plans have worked – but then he receives a letter that changes everything.

Lupine Ending #4: Season 1 villain Pellegrini sends Assane a confusing letter in prison

In the final scene of Lupine Season 3, Assane Diop is given an envelope by a prison guard. The letter is from his cell neighbor. In a shocking twist, we learn that this is… Monsieur Hubert Pellegrini (Hervé Pierre) – the murderer of his father, whom he put in prison in season 2.

Assane opens the envelope and finds a photo of himself as a teenager with the Lupine ribbon La Cagliostro is venge. The German edition of the volume is called The Countess of Cagliostro or The Youth of Arsène Lupin. It’s about the early days and beginnings of the gentleman crook.

Assane then picks up the relevant volume and – visibly flustered – reads out a passage:

The mystery was within you. In the secret of your soul. To trap you and build your trust, I welcomed the love you faked. You believed that I felt them myself. And in the end you really loved me. And so you lost all clarity.

We see a flash of various people close to Assane, including Pellegrini’s daughter Juliette (Clotilde Hesme), to whom this statement most closely applies. But then his mother’s voice overlays Assane’s, as if she were reading the passage herself. Pellegrini then grins eerily into the camera.

What the Season 3 Ending and Pellegrini’s Letter Mean for Lupine Season 4

The final scene in Part 3 is a punch in the stomach for all Assane fans. Throughout the entire season he is calm, has a plan and is one step ahead of his opponents. However, the letter from his arch-enemy Pellegrini completely throws him off track.

Pellegrini

The letter raises two important questions that need to be addressed in Season 4:

  • Are Pellegrini and Assane’s mother in cahoots?
  • Did Pellegrini actually manipulate Assane into going to prison – and his family is not safe?
  • On the one hand, the letter probably means that Assane will break out of prison at the next opportunity (i.e. at the beginning of Part 4) to check on his family. On the other hand, season 4 could be very emotional if Assane’s mother really works against him.

The Pellegrini chapter is therefore not over for Assane Diop and we will probably see more of Hubert and his daughter Juliette in season 4. It may well be that Pellegrini will once again be Assane’s great opponent in Part 4.

Part 4 of Lupine has not yet been officially confirmed. You can stream all 7 episodes of part 3 on Netflix since October 5th.
