Israel says the special forces have chosen Islamist terrorists as their target. However, according to the Palestinian authorities, the dead include an elderly woman and another civilian victim.
According to Israel, a cell of the Islamic Jihad terrorist group is operating in Jenin, which is planning “several major terrorist attacks” on Israeli territory.
Islamic Jihad representatives confirmed the clash with Israeli soldiers. The Palestinian Islamist group Hamas also says it took part in the firefight.
The clash took place in the Jenin refugee camp. It is one of the bloodiest in Jenin for years.
According to the Palestinian Ministry of Health, 29 people, among them civilians, have been killed in Israeli attacks on Palestinian territories during January.
The United States said today that the country’s foreign minister Antony Blinken travel to the region to reduce tensions between Israelis and Palestinians.
