When a completely new Star Trek film was announced at the beginning of the year, taking you far into the past of the sci-fi franchise, all hope seemed lost that we would ever see another part of the Reboot from 2009 receive. It looks like we buried Star Trek 4 too soon. The film is still being planned.
The industry magazine Variety looked into the future of Star Trek and found out some exciting details about future projects. The most important news: Star Trek 4 has a new screenwriter. Even after eight years of failure, Paramount Pictures and Bad Robot are sticking with the project.

Steve Yockey is supposed to be the next and final chapter for the now not so young anymore Crew from the Kelvin timeline write. She has been seen on the big screen in three films so far, namely Star Trek, Star Trek Into Darkness and Star Trek Beyond. It is not yet clear what Star Trek 4 will be about.

According to Variety, the new film will be released as… grand finale conceived. Chris Pine (Kirk), Zachary Quinto (Spock), Zoe Saldaña (Uhura), Karl Urban (Pille), John Cho (Sulu) and Simon Pegg (Scotty) are expected to join us for one final adventure into the vastness of space to return. The cast has not yet been officially confirmed.
Yockey is best known for the crime series The Flight Attendant, which he is the series creator behind. He started out as a playwright. He entered the world of moving images through the projects Awkward and Scream. He then co-wrote series such as Supernatural and Doom Patrol. Star Trek 4 will be his first feature film.

Despite all the good news: Star Trek 4 has not yet had an official theatrical release. It can be assumed that Yockey will completely restart the project, which means that we will meet again at the very beginning of production condition. The script needs to be finalized and the director position needs to be filled. It will probably be a few more years before Pine and Co. return to the Star Trek universe one last time.
