In Sudan, the Communist Party announced Monday the signing of a joint text with the rebellions of Kordofan and Darfur, which earned its leaders to be briefly detained on their return to Khartoum last week.
It is the first time that the two rebel movements, after signing a peace agreement after the 2019 revolution, have returned to the political game since the October 25 coup.
There “ justice “, the “ freedom », « legality “, the ” dealing with the causes of the rebellions and not only the integration of their fighters into legal life: the main lines of the platform signed between the Communist Party, the People’s Liberation Movement of Sudan-North of Abdelaziz al-Hilu and the Sudan Liberation Movement of Abdelwahid al-Nur are certainly general principles.
But the fact that a common text has been signed adds two major players to the opposition to the military junta of General Abdelfatah al-Burhane. Because the Sudanese Communist Party plays an important role in popular mobilization. He has been involved in all struggles since the 2019 uprising that brought down Omar al-Bashir’s regime. After having initially been part of the Forces of Freedom and Change, he left this coalition of the civil opposition, without however breaking with their common objectives.
Today that the political blockage is total and that the bloody repression of demonstrations continues, the Communist Party is therefore seeking to create a new coalition around it with organizations from the streets and civil society. Its objective is unambiguous: send the military back to their barracks and establish a civilian government without them.
The meetings took place in Juba and Kauda. The basic agreement consists in guaranteeing an active participation of these two armed groups, with the Communist Party, the Resistance Committees, the Association of Professionals, as well as all the radical forces, in a sort of enlarged front, with the objective principal to overthrow the military junta.
