In Senegal, families of those who lost their lives or were unjustly imprisoned during opposition protests over the past three years continue to demand justice. In early June, the approximately 700 members of this collective launched a petition to ask the judicial authorities to issue an international arrest warrant against the outgoing president. Macky Sall so that he can answer for the many arrests and deaths during the demonstrations (that took place) under his mandate. 14,682 people have signed the petition, but there has been no reaction from the authorities so far.
For Boubacar Seye, head of this collective, it is therefore necessary to involve as many people and international organizations as possible in this process: “ So that is why we have contacted the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights so that there is an investigation, to involve them in this fight, to move forward as quickly as possible, because justice must be done. We cannot talk about national reconciliation, about rebuilding the country without justice being done. »
For the time being, a general amnesty law on crimes committed during the protests between February 2021 and 2024 and adopted in the last days of the Macky Sall regime, prevents any examination before the courts in SenegalBut the collective promises to continue its fight and also before the International Criminal Court (ICC).
