Daniel Ståhl’s coach is forced to stay home from the World Cup.
But he has a trick to help the Swedish star to gold.
Daniel Ståhl enters this year’s WC with a form that can be questioned. He has admittedly made the longest throw in the world this year – and his second longest in his career – but it took well into the season.
Big setback
In fact, Ståhl has only thrown over 70 meters twice this season, and for the most part he has not even been world number one. But at the same time he enters the World Cup with several heavy championship golds behind him, and there will be an even battle for the noblest medal during the competition.
But at the same time, Ståhl has a disadvantage over its competitors. His coach Vesteinn Hafsteinsson, who has been with Ståhl for many successful years, is on sick leave and is forced to stay home from the competition. Instead, Åke Ruus, who has also been involved during large parts of Ståhl’s career – especially in his younger years – is present.
The coach’s moves
But Vesteinn does not relinquish its responsibility completely. According to Ruus, Hafsteinsson will, despite the large time differences that prevail and give advice – by phone.
– I will have SMS contact with Vesteinn. He would sit up at night, so he can convey views during the competition, says Åke Ruus to SVT.
Åke Ruus was last involved and coached during the team-SM – that was when he struck with the longest throw of the year. He believes that there is a part he can contribute.
– To have a certain calm and that he focuses on the right things. It is important to get started from the first cast, he says about his role.
