Former school leader Aad Kuiper also knows that the school is important to Hekendorp. “Hekendorp is a place where Catholics, Reformed Protestants and non-believers went to school together,” he recalls. From 1990 to 2000, Kuiper worked at the small school, implementing a school system that can best be described as a cross between Jenaplan and Dalton education (“I call it Jenaton”). “Both the pastor and the reformed priest gave religious lessons at Christmas. I thought it was the perfect example of what a public school should be.”
