The clearing of the Malmbanan has begun – damaged wagons are lifted away

Vehicles and equipment of various kinds began to arrive in Vassijaure during Tuesday. To begin with, it involves lifting away the damaged wagons that are to be driven away on trailers.

A diesel locomotive arrived in the afternoon to tow away the locomotive and the first eight carriages back to Kiruna. The track is without power at the accident site and the locomotive cannot run under its own power.

  • The rear parts of the train are to be picked up by a diesel locomotive from Narvik.

    Shorter stop than last time

When the track is free, the repair work of the track itself can begin. The Swedish Transport Administration estimates that it may be about two kilometers of track to be restored.

No forecast for when the work is finished is yet to be given.

    – We have not determined the total damage situation. But the stop will hopefully be shorter than in the case of the previous derailment, says Simon Sunna, section manager at the Swedish Transport Administration.

In the clip, Simon Sunna explains why the stop is expected to be shorter now.
