During the last week, SMHI issued a warning about torrential rain in several places in central, western and southern Sweden. Jönköping and other areas were hit hard by the downpour, which caused serious flooding, closed roads and power cuts.

Images and clips have circulated on social media that clearly show the substantial amounts of water that filled Jönköping residents’ homes, streets, parking lots and playgrounds.

News24 reported on the situation in Jönköping and in connection with that took some important tips from Anna Wennerström, press officer at the Swedish Agency for Community Protection and Preparedness, about how to prepare for a possible flood. Here are some of the tips:

  • Build a temporary barrier of sand or earth – it can stop a minor flood.
  • Move furniture and electrical appliances higher up in the house or place them on some kind of riser
  • Take pictures of the rooms in the house to be able to show the insurance company if necessary
  • Follow the news reporting in the media
  • Have the mobile phone fully charged.

    Many cities at risk

    MSB investigates every five years areas by large waterways and lakes, as well as along the coast with the aim of identifying places where there is a risk of flooding. What is also identified are places that are at risk of flooding during heavy rainfall.

    This is with regard to the climate adaptation work and the preventive work against damage to people, property and the environment in Sweden.

    The latest investigation was published in February this year, and since the investigation in 2018, 26 areas around Sweden have been identified and deemed to have a significant risk of flooding. According to the survey’s overall assessment,:

  • 15 areas along waterways and lakes have been identified
  • 17 areas identified by the sea
  • 10 areas have been identified with a significant risk of flooding in the event of torrential rain.

    Of all 26 areas identified, a large proportion of these are coastal cities. Some of the cities previously listed as at risk are:

  • Falsterbo, Skanör, Höllviken, Ljunghusen
  • Falun
  • Gothenburg
  • Halmstad
  • Haparanda
  • Helsingborg
  • Jönköping
  • Kalmar
  • Karlshamn

    • New cities at risk

    While new cities and areas have been added, some have been removed from the list and are no longer identified as areas at significant risk of flooding. Among these are Alingsås, Borås, Kungsbacka and Stenungsund.

  • Gable
  • Sundsvall
  • Varberg
  • Västerås
