Last Christmas and New Year’s weekend, from December 20 to January 12, five people died and 3,745 were injured in road traffic in Sweden, 102 of them were injured in Dalarna. This is shown by the Swedish Transport Agency’s preliminary statistics.
– Almost half of all accidents have been on roads with icy and snowy road conditions. It is therefore very important to keep the speed and a sufficient distance to avoid accidents, says Khabat Amin who is a statistician and traffic safety analyst at the Swedish Transport Agency.
Lowest death toll
Five deaths in the Christmas traffic is the lowest number so far in terms of deaths in Sweden.
– But it could be a coincidence, says Khabat Amin.
Looking at the injury statistics, the number of injuries on the valley roads decreased slightly last year compared to the year before. But looking at the whole country, the damage has increased somewhat.
Long vacations can reduce pressure
The big travel days are December 21 and 22. It is also when many traffic accidents occur. The same applies to December 27 and January 4 and 5.
– This year, many have the opportunity to take long-term leave. This means that the journey will probably be extended over several days, which reduces the pressure on our roads, says Khabat Amin
