The Chinese manufacturer Oukitel stands out with its WP19, a smartphone with a giant battery, with a record capacity of 21,000 mAh. Enough to ensure intensive use for a week away from a charger…
How to stand out in the world of smartphones, in a very crowded market where all models end up looking the same? Quite simply, by being different. This is obviously the track followed Oukitel for his WP19. Little known in France – despite a fairly rich catalog – this Chinese manufacturer has indeed for a rather radical solution by providing its new phone with a gigantic battery, with a capacity of 21,000 mAh. Enough to ensure, according to its manufacturer, an exceptional autonomy, of several days or even a whole week in fairly intensive use: 36 hours in video playback, 123 hours in music listening, 122 hours in call and up to 2 252 hours on standby, almost 94 days. What we would be tempted to believe when we know that the majority of current smartphones use batteries ranging from 3,000 to 5,000 mAh, which is sufficient for normal use, with a recharge every two days on average. On paper, the Oukitel WP19 does between four and six times better…
Oukitel WP19: a weight well above average
To achieve this feat, Oukitel cleverly merged a “classic” telephone with an external battery – the famous power banks that you take on a trip to charge mobile devices – the WP19 can also be used as a backup battery, to charge headphones, a connected watch or even another phone! A marriage that results in dimensions and, above all, a weight superior to the ordinary: thus the WP19 measures 78.5 mm wide, 161 mm high and 14 mm thick and weighs 485 g – no, not only “on the scale” is its mass, essentially constant! In fact, if it occupies approximately the same surface as a lambda smartphone, it is a little thicker than the average – between 8 and 9 mm in general. But it is very logically much heavier, with some 300 g more than most current modules. There is therefore no risk of forgetting it in a pocket. And long conversations with the phone to your ear can end up feeling like weightlifting sessions…
Oukitel WP19: a phone almost like the others
But whatever ! The audience targeted by Oukitel with this extraordinary smartphone is clearly not that of Apple or Samsung customers. The WP19 seems naturally intended for those who favor autonomy over any other criterion. This does not prevent it from displaying more than respectable characteristics. 4G compatible only (but with all the frequencies used in France all the same), it is thus equipped with a Mediatek Helio G95 chip, 8 GB of RAM and 256 GB of storage (expandable with a card), a 6.78-inch screen with an IPS LCD panel (with a comfortable FHD+ definition of 1,080 x 2,400 pixels and an impressive resolution of 388 pixels per inch) with a refresh rate of 90 Hz ensuring good display fluidity. On the photo side, there are three modules on the back, with a 64MP main sensor, a 20MP night sensor and a 2MP macro sensor, and a 16MP front camera. And the range is completed with NFC, Bluetooth 5.0, a fingerprint sensor on the side, all running Android 12, with all Google services.
There remains the design, massive – it’s an understatement… – and angular which obviously won’t please everyone, with the exception of hardened phone enthusiasts. A specialty of Oukitel, which already offers several models of the same kind, with 8,000 and 12,500 mAh batteries in its catalog, such as the WP5 or the WP18, which can already be purchased online. The price of the WP19 is still unknown, but the WP18 being sold for around 160 euros, it should not be excessive given its exceptional characteristics.
