MOROCCO. Five-year-old Rayan had been stuck in a 32-meter deep hole in a village north of Chefchaouen for four days. Rescuers managed to extract the child. Alas, the boy died announced the king of Morocco.

[Mis à jour le 6 février 2022, à 11h52] “Following the tragic accident which cost the life of the child Rayan Oram, His Majesty King Mohammed VI called the parents of the deceased, who died after falling into a well”, can we read in a press release sent by King Mohamed VI, recording the death of little Rayan this Saturday, February 5. Since Tuesday, the emergency services were at work to get the young Rayan, 5, out of a well in which he had fallen. Standing 32 meters tall, the task was arduous and rescuers took four days to reach the child. An operation all the more delicate given the nature of the ground and the risk of landslide.

Finally, after multiple efforts, Rayan was able to get out of this dry well. From his extraction, no information filtered on his state of health: It is “impossible to affirm that he is alive with certainty”, had thus recognized with AFP a chief rescuer, Abdelhadi Tamrani. Although having transmitted during these long days of waiting, water and oxygen to the boy, it was impossible to know if he had been able to use them to the end.

What we do know is that young Rayan was alive, although weakened the first few days. A rescue worker told international media: “I managed to speak with the child. I asked him if he could hear me and there was an answer. I waited a minute and I saw that he was starting to use oxygen.” However, as of Saturday, the head of the rescuers recognized that it was “impossible to know if the child is alive”.

The fate of little Rayan moved the whole world. Indeed, thousands of messages were broadcast on social networks throughout the extraction, and at the announcement of his death. So the hashtag #saverayan was again this Saturday at the top of the main trends of Twitter in Morocco.
