The chaos in Swedish skiing – now the national team is forced to act

It has stormed around the leadership in the Swedish alpine national team.
Now it is clear that two of the top performers, Karin Stolt Halvarsson and Lars Melin, may leave their posts.

Recently, it has been turbulent around the Alpine national team. According to an anonymous survey from SVT, almost half of the skaters lack confidence in the national team management.

Now changes are happening.

Chaos in the ski association

In a press release, the Swedish Skiing Association writes that Karin Stolt Halvarssonalpine and ski cross manager, as well as Lars Melinnational team manager alpine and ski cross, may leave his roles.

– We have agreed that Karin Stolt Halvarsson will now leave her role as alpine and ski cross manager. With enormous commitment, hard work and in an open dialogue with all concerned, she has led the Alpine business during a challenging time and implemented important improvements in the way we work and manage the business. I would have liked to see her in a different role in the association, but have great understanding and respect for her choosing to move on at this stage. She will therefore leave the ski association, says Pernilla Farmergeneral secretary of the Swedish Skiing Association.

– Lars Melin has for almost a decade worked with the Swedish national teams in alpine and ski cross, a role that is extremely demanding and tiring but where during this time we have also achieved many fine results and see a rising curve both on the women’s and men’s side. He will remain for some time to create the best possible conditions for the handover, which I am happy and grateful for.

In the mailing, the association writes that “there is a need for change and development, which will place high demands on everyone in Alpine Sweden going forward.” There has been a lot of criticism lately.

“It is clear that they thought about whether the future in this makes me feel good when you are treated badly and when the resources in the sport disappear,” wrote one of the riders in the survey.

– We want Sweden to be a strong alpine nation and be able to live up to our vision of Best in the world – everyone on snow. I want to be clear, the board knows that there are problems in the alpine operations that need to be fixed. The alpine mapping gives us a good basis for finding solutions that allow us to become more and be better. Not everyone will like everything the same way, it’s not like that in any business, but I wish that we now move forward with respect and in good spirit so that the organization can do its job, says Anders Furbeckchairman of the board of the Swedish Skiing Association.

– I would like to extend a big and warm thank you to both Karin Stolt Halvarsson and Lars Melin for their efforts for Swedish winter sports and for the ski association. They both have a huge commitment and a big heart for the sport and for everyone active, says Pernilla Bonde.
