The change at Ikea applies from 13 November

It was as a 17-year-old who Ingvar Kamprad founded Ikea. Then he sold everything from pens to wallets. Today, the company is one of the world’s largest furniture stores, with hundreds of stores and thousands of employees.

Over the past decades, in other words, countless people have bought and decorated their homes with furniture and objects from Ikea – and some of the products have become real prized possessions in recent days.

Ikea Family was launched in 1984

During Ingvar Kamprad’s lifetime, he laid the foundation for what later – at the Ikea department store in Linköping in 1984 – became the Ikea Family loyalty program. In 1952, he started what was called the “Silver Club”.

“Ingvar understood early on that it was important to have a long-term and strong relationship with his customers. Through the club he could have a dialogue with them directly and learn what the customers wanted and needed,” the company writes on their website, where they continue further:

“A lot has happened since the Silver Club was started, but our view of you as a customer is the same as Ingvar’s. In our IKEA Family club, you have always been our source of inspiration. We want to get to know you, what you like, your ideas and plans so that we can give you the best of what IKEA has to offer just you.”

But now Ikea has announced that it is launching a brand new loyalty program for Ikea Family members in Sweden.

More specifically, already on November 13, it launched an add-on that allows members to collect points by shopping at Ikea, both online and in store.

– With the new points system, our members can both collect points and unlock rewards regardless of how they shop at Ikea. It creates flexibility and makes our benefits more accessible, says Myriam Ruffocommercial manager at Ikea Sweden, i a press release.

She continues further:

– By rewarding our returning customers with benefits and offers tailored to their unique wishes and needs, we hope to become even more accessible to people regardless of the size of their wallet.

The benefits can be, for example, a free meal in the department store’s restaurant or a voucher.
