The Independent National Electoral Commission (Céni) postpones, sine diethe elections of urban councilors, mayors and deputy mayors scheduled for June 19, 2024 which was to follow the municipal elections of December 20, 2023.

According to the electoral commission, this postponement is the result of financial constraints linked to the physical organization of the elections.
A group of candidates approached the National Assembly to encourage it to force the government to release financial resources. “ The reason put forward by the Ceni seems absurd to us and we believe that there is a hidden maneuver behind this postponement in order to promote illegitimacy, declares Jonathan Mazambi, municipal councilor, candidate for Deputy Mayor in the municipality of Ngiri-Ngiri in Kinshasa and spokesperson for the group of candidates. Thus, after consultation with other elected municipal comrades from other provinces and certain candidates in the said elections, we resolved to contact the President of the National Assembly to, firstly, denounce this umpteenth postponement, while emphasizing that this decision to the Ceni creates administrative uncertainty and prevents our compatriots from choosing their leaders with complete freedom and transparency through our representatives. »
The municipal councilor also points out the financial difficulties of these local elected officials who have not received funding:“ No installation costs, no emoluments, but we do what is necessary to operate with our meager means, by contributing. What we are asking the President of the National Assembly is to plead in our favor with the authorities concerned in order to obtain success for the rapid organization of these elections. »
